Our Story

Montana Roots was born from a love for the earth and a belief that food should be medicine for everything it touches—soil, microbes, people, and animals. Montana Roots is driven by a vision to grow healthy, sustainable food year-round in cold climates, while fostering meaningful community engagement.

Founded in 2012 with the belief that northern, cold climates can support year-round food production, Montana Roots began experimenting with simple, no-heat greenhouse techniques. Located on the banks of the beautiful Yellowstone River, the success of these no-heat greenhouses sparked a journey into aquaponics. This journey ultimately led to the construction of the heart of Montana Roots: a 5,000-gallon aquaponic system that has been producing thousands of pounds of food annually. Our goal is to provide our community with fresh, locally grown food no matter the season!

Meet Our Team

Sam Mascari

Sam grew up in Livingston, Montana and spent his childhood romping around the same banks of the Yellowstone River where Montana Roots' aquaponics system flows and grows. After college and travel brought him back to his hometown he began a quest to bring year-round local food and nature connection opportunities to the community. With a strong belief in the power of community Sam is committed to creating spaces where individuals can learn, heal, and grow together. He is currently living on piece of land where he, his wife Mary, son and daughter (and all their animals) are starting a homestead. Eventually, their goal is to have this land serve as a community teaching and healing center, dedicated to sharing practical knowledge on sustainable living, regenerative agriculture, and wellness practices.

Sam's work is deeply rooted in the values of environmental stewardship. He believes that by connecting with the land and supporting one another, communities can thrive in harmony with nature.

Sophie Koopmeiners

Sophie joined the team in January 2020 as the greenhouse manager. She moved to Bozeman 12 years ago to attend Montana State University, where she studied sustainable food systems and environmental horticulture. She gained experience working on aquaponic and hydroponic farms in Denver, CO, as well as on an organic farm in Bozeman. Sophie is an advocate for food justice and believes that everyone deserves access to healthy, locally grown food. She works to build a more equitable and vibrant food economy in Southwest Montana by fostering connections between local farmers, businesses, and consumers. Whether it’s tending to crops in the greenhouse, harvesting, or coordinating deliveries, she is dedicated to making sure the farm operates smoothly.
